Next Armenian provocation on frontline foiled

After the short-term relative silence on the contact line of Armenian-Azerbaijani troops, the Armenian armed forces have resorted to another provocation.

An Armenian saboteur and reconnaissance group attempted to attack Azerbaijani positions along the contact line of troops on November 12, Azerbaijan’s defense ministry reported. The attack attempt of the Armenian side was met with proper response and the saboteurs were forced to retreat.

Azerbaijani army eliminated two members of an Armenian saboteur group, there are also numerous wounded according to the preliminary information.

The ministry said Azerbaijani side suffered no losses, noting that currently the situation on the contact line is under control.

The Armenian armed forces also suffered losses during their ceasefire violations on October 9. Up to six Armenian servicemen have been killed and many injured, while one Azerbaijani serviceman was injured during the military clashes that took place along the contact.

Despite numerous calls by the international community to adhere to the ceasefire regime, the Armenian side continues to escalate tensions on the contact line of Armenian-Azerbaijani troops.

Armenia has substantially increased provocations on the contact line and along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in recent months causing losses of life not only among the servicemen, but also among civilians.

This factor, which is in gross violation of international law and has always been condemned by the international community, has turned into a dangerous tendency to which Armenia’s military junta frequently resorts.

For over two decades, Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict that emerged over Armenia’s territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor. Since a war in the early 1990s, the Armenian Armed Forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions.

Peace talks, mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. through the OSCE Minsk Group, are underway on the basis of a peace outline proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs and dubbed the Madrid Principles. The negotiations have been largely fruitless so far.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on a pullout from the neighboring country’s territories.
