Making of Yasar Kemal opera to be shown ahead of Tekfen Philharmonic tribute concert

Next Monday’s concert at the Lutfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Center will mark the first time excerpts from the 165-minute opera are performed in Turkey.

Commissioned by La Scala in Milan and composed by Fabio Vacchi, the three-act “Teneke” premiered on Sept. 22, 2007 at La Scala, where it had seven performances until Oct. 4 of that year.

Dedicated to Yasar Kemal, who died on Feb. 28 aged 91, the Nov. 30 concert will have an extensive repertoire, also including Anatolian elegies the author had assembled in his early years and the soundtrack Zulfu Livaneli had composed for “Yer Demir Gok Bakır” (Iron Earth, Copper Sky), a 1987 film based on Kemal’s novel of the same name.

The multinational Tekfen Philharmonic will be conducted by British maestro James Judd at the concert, which will feature classical pianist İdil Biret as soloist.
