Kenyan police kill 2 militants in northern border town

NAIROBI (CIHAN)- Kenyan police said Friday they have killed two suspected Al-Shabaab militants in the northern border town of Mandera.
Mandera County Police Commander Noah Mwavanda said one suspect was arrested as an unknown number managed to escape with injuries on Thursday night as the insurgents tried to raid a diesel tank at a power station in Mandera town.
“There were over 30 militants who attacked the Kenya Power plant and threw explosives but we managed to kill two and recover a gun, 145 bullets, five magazines and a number of explosive devices,” Mwavanda told Xinhua on Friday.
The police commander said the raid took place at around 03:00 a. m.. “We laid an ambush and killed two of them while the rest escaped with injuries as they crossed over to Somalia,” Mwavanda said.
“We conducted a search a few hours later and arrested one of the suspects with a magazine. We are investigating the incident,” he said, noting that the attackers were youth.
Meanwhile in Wajir County, police are investigating an incident in which suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked another Kenya Power station and blew up a diesel tank on Thursday night.
The militants also threw explosives at the offices of a nongovernmental organization injuring a security guard. Detectives were on Friday examining the IEDs as investigations commenced.
The police said the attackers were part of a gang planning to damage the station that supplies power using special generators.
Kenya has heightened security around the country with security agencies at an unprecedented state of alert after latest reports that Al-Shabaab plans more attacks against Kenya.
Since Kenya sent troops across the border into Somalia in October 2011, northern and parts of eastern Kenya have been hit by a series of blasts, many targeting local security forces and humanitarian workers.
Several attacks believed to have been carried out by Al-Shabaab have occurred in Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa and Dadaab districts of northern Kenya even as the military reports gains against the Islamist group by capturing their military bases and killing scores of them. (CihanXinhua)
