Journalist ordered to pay compensation for TuRGEV insult

Barii ince, a journalist and the managing director of the BirGandun daily, has been ordered by a court to pay TL 5,000 in damages for insulting the Foundation of Youth and Education in Turkey (TanduRGEV), of which President Recep Tayyip Erdoganand’s son Bilal Erdogan and daughter Esra Albayrak are executive board members.
According to a ruling handed down by the Istanbul 22nd Criminal Court of First Instance in a hearing not attended by ince or his lawyer, the journalist was found guilty of insulting the foundation in an article published in the BirGandun daily.
The court said other cases had also been filed against ince for his article in the BirGandun daily on charges of insulting President Erdogan and Bilal. The court noted ince had earlier this year already been ordered to pay Erdogan and Bilal TL 10,000 in total in damages for insulting them.
ince made headlines earlier this year when it emerged that his defense statement was actually an acrostic poem, with the first letter of every paragraph spelling out, and”Thief Tayyip, and” referring to Erdogan.
TanduRGEVand’s lawyer Sema Yildiz argued inceand’s article exceeded the limits of free speech and should be viewed as insult.
TanduRGEV is known for some of its top officialsand’ involvement in the corruption scandal that went public on Dec. 17 and 25, 2013, implicating Erdoganand’s family, including Bilal, and other senior government officials. The scandal involved many valuable plots of land and even a neighborhood in Ankara.
