Journalist and writer Leyla Umar passes away at age 87

Veteran Turkish journalist and writer Leyla Umar passed away on Monday at a nursing home in Istanbul.
Umar, 87, who had been fighting Alzheimerand’s disease since 2009, started her career in 1955 with the Milliyet newspaper and continued working for the daily until her retirement in 1977. She was a permanent member of the Turkish Journalistsand’ Association (TGC).
During Umarand’s 22-year career, she interviewed dozens of illustrious political and artistic figures from across the world, including Fidel Castro, idi Amin, Nelson Mandela, Carlos Menem, Yasser Arafat, Raisa Gorbacheva, Felipe Gonzales, Julio Iglesias, Kirk Douglas, Diana Ross and Liza Minelli.
Umar bequeathed a portion of her estate to help street children.
