Izmir police and thousands of protesters clash during Soma demonstration

IZMIR (CIHAN)- Tension escalated in the Aegean province of Izmir when police fired tear gas and water cannon at thousands of protesters who held a demonstration on tragic mine explosion in Manisa’s Soma town, killing 282 so far.

Large crowd, more than 20,000, marched from Basmane neighborhood to Konak Square, where riot police intervened in the protest. When the group resisted security forces, police responded with water cannon and tear gas.

Many protesters, affected by tear gas, were taken to hospital and the rest continued to resist police by throwing stones.

The clash between the two groups is still ongoing.
