Indictment submitted against Zaman reporter for insulting ErdoIan after 14 months

A prosecutor at Istanbuland’s BakirkandOy Courthouse has submitted an indictment against Zaman daily court reporter Yakup andcetin on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in one of his reports 14 months ago.
Speaking with Todayand’s Zaman on Thursday, andcetin said he found out on Wednesday that BakirkandOy Deputy Chief Public Prosecutor idris Kurt, who is in charge of terrorism investigations, submitted an indictment to the BakirkandOy Public Prosecutorand’s Office against him and Yakup Saygili, the former head of the Istanbul Police Departmentand’s Financial Crimes Unit, on Sept. 10 on charges of insulting the president.
andcetin said neither he nor Saygili were summoned by Kurt to the BakirkandOy Public Prosecutorand’s Office to give testimony about the report in question. and”I was not informed about the investigation against me until I visited the BakirkandOy Courthouse on Wednesday, and” he said.
Saygili, who has been in Silivri Prison since Sept. 1 of last year as part of a government-backed investigation, was also informed when the prison administration gave him a court notice on Oct. 7, andcetin said. Saygili was also not summoned by Kurt about the charges.
Saygili, along with dozens of police chiefs and officers, remain in prison pending trial as part of an investigation against the police forces who took part in infamous December 2013 graft probes, implicating high-profile names in the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government and people in the inner circle of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
On Sept. 4 of last year, andcetin reported in the Zaman daily on the court testimony of Saygili where he referred to an audio recording between President Erdogan and his son Bilal that was leaked on the Internet after December 2013. In the phone conversation between Erdogan and his son, the two allegedly discussed how to and”zeroand” huge sums of money stashed at houses of several people on Dec. 17 — when police raided a number of venues as part of the corruption investigation.
According to andcetin, Kurt cannot file a criminal case against him as he is not a prosecutor dealing with press offenses. and”Even if he is entitled to, the statute of limitations for press offenses is four months. More than 14 months have passed since the story appeared in Zaman, and” andcetin said.
