Improper gas masks tirggerred high death toll in mine blast, says American expert

WASHINGTON (CIHAN)- Randall Harris, head of a US-based mine security committee stated that the reason why high numbers of miners, as many as 301, were killed in a mine explosion in western Turkey, stems from the fact that gas masks used by miners during incident are not suitable for coal mines, where more efficient masks must be used.

Speaking to Cihan news agency, Harris said gas masks in mine are like simple devices used as regular masks in case of oxygen deficiency. Contrary to Turkish officials who claimed that gas mask can be effective for 45 minutes, Harris said they can only protect wearer for 15-16 minutes.

“Such masks are used in mines apart from coal mines. If you work in field of mineral, rock or gold mining and there is not possibility for mine to burn completely, carbon monoxide arises only where explosion breaks out. In such cases a gas mask for 15-16 minutes will be sufficient for you,” added Harris.
