IGP inaugurates rebranded SARS, complaints response unit

By: Ronald Mutum

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase yesterday inaugurated the rebranded Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS) and the Complaints Response Units (CRUs) of the force designed to check police malpractices. He said at the inauguration in Abuja that the police would adopt the use of stun guns as a new weapon for operatives of the SARS to reduce fatalities in their operations. Arase said the rebranded SARS would be kitted differently from the squad in the past who wear jeans and T-shirts, adding that their dress code, mode of operation, orientation and quality of service would abide by rule of law and align to the expectations of citizens.

“In addition, in days to come, the weapon profile of SARS will be reviewed towards the engagement of less lethal technologies/weapon system such as electro-muscular disruption technology (taser or stun guns) for components of their operations to reduce incidents of fatalities associated with application of lethal weapons,” the IGP said.
