Human rights defender: No criminal case opened on incident outside police department in Baku

Baku: Chairman of the Azerbaijan Anti-Torture Committee, human rights defender Elchin Behbudov and his assistant Rovshan Mammadov have monitored the temporary detention facility of the Sabunchu district police department.

He said they have inspected the conditions in the detention facility.

“The heating system was in working condition. 15 people are being held therein, on charges of swindling, storing drugs, and stabbing. The detainees had no complaints. As you know, there took place a clash outside the Sabunchu police department on November 5. Elchin Gasimov (1985), a religious man, was detained by police. About 50 religious persons gathered at the police department around 10:30PM, calling for the release of Elchin Gasimov. That’s when the clash took place. As a result of the incident, two police officers were injured. Several people were arrested over the incident. No criminal case has been opened in this regard. They will today be taken to the court,” Behbudov said.
