Human rights defender conducts monitoring in military unit

Baku: Chairman of the Azerbaijan Committee Against Torture, human rights defender Elchin Behbudov has conducted a monitoring in a military unit.

As a result of the monitoring conducted in a penal military unit under the Defence Ministry in the Khidirli village of Salyan, it was revealed that 52 persons are kept in there: “They are mainly accused of desertion and quarrels with other soldiers. During the monitoing conducted in the military unit, there have been no reports of torture or inhumane treatment. At the same time, it was revealed that no cases of death have been recorded over the last few years. One soldier has been demobilized due to homosexuality”, Elchin Behbudov told APA.

Elchin Behbudov also noted that the military unit will pass through capital repairs under the instructions of Defence Minister Zakir Hasanov.
