HDP co-leader hit in head by gas canister in restive curfew town

Pro-Kurdish Peoplesand’ Democratic Party (HDP)o-chair Figen Yanduksekdai was hit in the head by a gas canister fired by the police during a visit to the southeastern town of Silvan, where a curfew has been in place for the past 10 days. Yanduksekdai, escorted by a delegation of HDP lawmakers and others, was trying to visit a Silvan neighborhood that has been the scene of heavy clashes between the security forces and militants from the Kurdistan Workersand’ Party (PKK) terrorist group. The group, however, was blocked by police using water cannons and tear gas after marching for about 300 meters, the private Cihan news agency reported. Some of the lawmakers in the group had arguments with the police, while some deputies fainted in the midst of the melee, Cihan said. The police eventually did not allow the group to enter the neighborhood, citing security reasons. Speaking to the private IMC television station, Yanduksekdai said the police attacked the group without any prior warning, even though they knew that the people in the group were unarmed civilians. She said some in the group were injured but did not elaborate.
