Harsh police intervention in higher education protest

A total of 23 students were detained and many were exposed to harsh police intervention during a protest against the Higher Education Board (YOK) at İstanbul University on Friday.

The students who protested establishment of the YOK began to march to faculty of science. Holding placards in their hands, they attempted to march Vezneciler Street. Riot police closed the street to the students and warned them to lay down the placards. The group laid the placards down but police officers gathered around the students tearing tear gas. Some were dragged by the officers.

Police tried to prevent press members from covering the incident. 23 students were detained in the protest.
