French Alstom International Company intends to participate in modernizing Azerbaijan’s transport network.

The news was announced by the company’s President Henri Poupart-Lafarge.

“The Azerbaijani government has decided to launch the complete modernization of the transport network, and we are absolutely eager to participate in that initiative,” he told Trend Agency on May 12.

Alstom International will supply freight locomotives for Azerbaijan’s railways. The relevant agreement on supplying 50 freight locomotives of KZ8A model was signed at the Azerbaijani-French joint business forum on May 12.

The locomotives will be assembled in Alstom’s EKZ Joint Venture in 2016-2018.

The agreement is worth €300 million. Alstom’s share amounts to around €150 million.

The signed contract also envisages the construction of a service depot, technical assistance and maintenance, and training the client’s staff. These are subject to negotiation in the next six months.

Poupart-Lafarge noted the signed agreement on delivering 50 freight locomotives to Azerbaijan is of great importance for the company.

Alstom also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the reconstruction of the ‘May 28’ metro station and the second stretch of the ‘green’ Khatai-Hazi Aslanov-2 branch, aimed at developing modern metro cars for both new lines and gradually replacing the existing fleet of Baku metro. Both parties agreed to sign a final agreement in the coming two months.

Along with the supply of freight locomotives, there are several projects in which Alstom Company is interested, particularly where supplying passenger locomotives and trams is concerned, Poupart-Lafarge said.

He also referred to the creation of a tram line in Ganja, adding that the project is in the early stage of development.

“At present, we are working with the city mayor’s office and the Ministry of Finance on this project,” Poupart-Lafarge said.

Alstom is a global leader in the manufacture of equipment for generation and transmission of electrical energy and railway infrastructure. The company operates in the markets of about 100 countries. Alstom has been operating actively in the Azerbaijani market for over 20 years.
