Former HDP deputy detained at airport, banned from traveling abroad

Pro-Kurdish Peoplesand’ Democratic Congress (HDK)o-spokesperson Sabahat Tuncel was detained early on Thursday at Istanbul Atatandurk Airport on charges of spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization in speeches she made during the 2010 Newroz celebrations — the Kurdish welcoming of spring.
Several media outlets reported on Thursday that the BakirkandOy Chief Public Prosecutorand’s Office launched an investigation into Tuncel a few months ago due to her Newroz speech in which she allegedly spread propaganda in favor of the Kurdistan Workersand’ Party (PKK), which is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the EU.
Former pro-Kurdish Peoplesand’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Tuncel was reportedly detained by police at around 10 a.m. at passport control. The police seized Tunceland’s belongings and took her to the BakirkandOy Courthouse.
Following her interrogation, the BakirkandOy Chief Public Prosecutorand’s Office requested that the Istanbul 7th Penal Court of Peace order and”judicial supervisionand” of the suspect to prevent her from fleeing Turkey.
Tuncel, who was given an international travel ban by the court and released pending trial, later wrote in her Twitter account that she was prohibited from leaving the country because of speeches she made back in 2010 and 2013. She also complained that she had not been notified about the detention warrant issued by a prosecutor, calling the move and”political.and”
