Flood hit Serbia appeals the international community for help

NEW YORK (CIHAN)- The president of Serbia appealed to the international community on Tuesday (27 May) to help with recovery efforts after the country was hit by devastating floods last week which claimed dozens of lives and affected over 1.5 million people.

The flood was the largest environmental disaster to hit the region in recorded history, with over 175 million Euros in damage.

During a Security Council meeting on Kosovo, the president Tomislav Nikolic appealed to Council members to look at Ds that had been handed out to them with images of the destruction.

“You have received Ds featuring part of the tragedy that hit Serbia, I would appreciate if you took a look at it. Man does not demean himself to ask for help, but is great when he provides help,” he said.

Earlier, Nikolic met with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discus organizing a donor conference to help dealing with the consequences of the floods.

SOUNDBITE (Serbian), Tomislav Nikolic, President of Serbia:
“Unfortunately, notwithstanding enormous will and desire, we cannot rebuild alone what has been destroyed. We need assistance to help our citizens to restore what is lost, redo the agricultural works where it is possible and where it is not to help them to get through the year and begin the next one in normal conditions. You have received Ds featuring part of the tragedy that had hit Serbia. I would appreciate if you took a look at it. Man does not demean himself when asking for help, but he is great when he provides help.”
