First snow of season brings 10 cm to Turkey’s east

Ten centimeters of snow, the first snowfall of the season, hit eastern Turkey on Tuesday, especially in the province of Erzurum near the PalandandOken Mountains.
Snowfall began on Monday night and continued throughout the night, with locals waking up to difficult conditions in which to make their way to work. Municipal snow cleaning teams began to work around in Erzurum. Some municipal workers even sang folk songs as they worked.
Highway teams hit the roads with snowplows to move fallen snow off the roads and spread salt to prevent ice on the roads on the Erzurum-Artvin and Erzurum-BingandOl highways. The driver of one car on the Erzurum-Tortum highway lost control of his vehicle and the car overturned. The driver was unharmed, while a passenger was left only slightly injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
The province of Van was also hit with snowfall, with five centimeters falling in the Baikale district. The snow made transport very difficult on the Van-Bahandcesaray highway, with fog creating dangerous conditions. Kayseriand’s Mount Erciyes and Hakkari province also experienced snowfall.
