Vice President Namadi Sambo has assured Nigerians of government’s sincerity at tackling insurgency and other socio-economic challenges confronting the nation.

He gave the assurance yesterday in Abuja at the 2014 Annual Directors Conference and Exhibition, themed: “Imperatives of Good Governance in Promoting Investment Opportunities” organised by the Institute of Directors (IoD) Nigeria.

The Vice president appealed to the business community to uphold the principles of corporate governance and best practices.

He added that it was time for all to project Nigeria in good light among the comity of nations and to assure the world that it is safe to do business in Nigeria and with Nigerians.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary Common Services Office (CSO) of the Office of the Head of Service, Dr. Babatope Ajakaye, Sambo said “as a nation, we are aware of the various challenges confronting us which have also been complicated by insecurity.”

He said the concept of good governance centres on responsibility of government at all level, to meet the needs of the masses.

Sambo said that government is commit-ted to on-going reforms using the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) and that it has yielded much fruits and talks are being concluded with entrepreneurs and institutional investors from countries like USA, Canada, South Africa, China, Lebanon, Brazil, India among others.

President and Chairman of the IoD, Mrs. Eniola Fadayomi called on all stakeholders in the Nigerian economy to fully embrace corporate governance with particular focus on responsibility, integrity, accountability, transparency, self regulation and effective internal control systems.

She said the importance of organisations investing in the training and leadership guidelines available in the area of corporate governance cannot be overemphasised in order to deal with the current situation whereby lots of Nigerian CEOs are being replaced by expatriates due to lack of confidence in indigenous CEOs.
