EU expresses concern for Turkish media in progress report

The European Union released annual Turkey Progress Report on Tuesday criticizing Turkey for operation against media institutions, respect to for human rights and democratic standards.

The report was unveiled by EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn. He noted: “Over the past year, significant shortcomings affected the independence of the judiciary as well as freedom of assembly and freedom expression.”

The report highlighted operation against Koza-İpek Media Group in October just days before the general elections, which is a source of concern. There was also serious concern over “ongoing and new criminal cases against journalists, writers or social media users”.
