Death toll increased to 282 in mine explosion

MANISA (CIHAN)- The number of the people who were killed at mine blast in the Aegean province of Manisa’s Soma town increased to 282 as of Thursday morning, stated Energy Minister Taner YIldIz.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said 282 miners have been pulled dead from the mine and search and rescue works are ongoing.

Authorities say the disaster followed an explosion and fire caused by a power distribution unit. Because Soma Madencilik, the company that owns the mine, does not keep entry and exit records, no exact numbers of how many people were trapped inside were available.

According to miners, between 700 and 800 workers work in one shift, and the blast happened during a shift change. There was also no clear information on the ratio of carbon dioxide and oxygen inside the mine.
