DavutoIlu reiterates call for ‘liberal and inclusive’ constitution

Turkeyand’s greatest need is the creation of a new constitution predicated on and”human dignity, and” Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoilu said on Monday in his first meeting with the new list of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputies who were elected in the snap election on Nov. 1.
and”Our greatest need is a constitution based on human dignity. We call on opinion leaders and intellectuals to get rid of any kinds of prejudgments and come together to work to draft a new constitution for the country. We invite everyone, so we can get rid of the current Constitution, which was prepared by coup leaders, and” Davutoilu stated during his speech at his partyand’s headquarters in Ankara.
The ruling AK Party swept back to single-party rule after a snap election on Nov. 1, taking 317 of the 550 seats in Parliament, just shy of the 330 seats required to hold a referendum on changing the Constitution. With this victory, Turkeyand’s expectations for a long-awaited replacement of the existing Constitution, which was drafted under martial law after the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup, with a new civilian constitution are stronger than ever.
The 1982 Constitution has long been criticized by many for failing to respond to todayand’s need for expanded rights and freedoms. Davutoilu thereby said in his speech that the new constitution must ensure that freedoms and needs are drafted with an all-inclusive consensus.
and”This duty is a priority for all political parties. We want to start a new era. Letand’s start a new era in which we experience participatory democracy all together. We are planning to introduce comprehensive and liberating reforms in the upcoming weeks, and” the prime minister added.
Unlike in his previous speeches, Davutoilu this time avoided touching on the issue of a transition to a presidential system that is being touted by government officials once again amid rumors that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is looking to pressure the ruling party to opt for a switch.
Erdogan supports the formation of a and”Turkish-styleand” presidential system that he claims will help the countryand’s development by eliminating andquotmulti-headednessandquot in state governance and thus pave the way for a more effective decision-making system. His plans were disrupted after the AK Party lost its majority in the parliamentary election held on June 7. However, his ambitions were renewed after the AK Party regained its parliamentary majority in the snap election held on Nov. 1.
