Contemporary Istanbul art fair unrolls 10th edition

Istanbul is home to over 700 pieces of artwork, ranging from sculptures to paintings and new media art, from 102 galleries in 24 countries displayed across two venues in the Harbiye neighborhood this week, thanks to the annual art fair Contemporary Istanbul (Ci), which is marking its landmark 10th edition until Sunday.
The four-day fair got under way on Wednesday with an invitation-only preview at its two venues, the Landutfi Kirdar International Convention and Exhibition Center (ICEC) and the Istanbul Congress Center (ICC). The fairand’s public display runs Nov. 12-15.
Billed by its organizers as the and”regionand’s leading art fair,and” Ciand’s 2015 edition is hosting art galleries from the Iranian capital in its focus country section, titled and”Contemporary Tehranand” this year.
Iranian artists represented at and”Contemporary Tehranand” include veteran Ali Akbar Sadeghi, younger generation artists Nasser Bakhshi and Babak Roshaninejad, new media artist Morehshin Allahyari and multidisciplinary artist Houman Mortazavi. They are represented by galleries including Dastanand’s Basement, Shirin Gallery, Aaran Gallery, Assar Art Gallery and the Lajevardi Foundation – New Media Society.
Also displayed as part of the focus section is a 12-piece selection from the vast Mobarqa Collection, owned by Nadeer Mobarqa and his wife. Their collection of over 600 works of Iranian modern and contemporary art includes drawings, installations, paintings, photographs, prints, sculpture and video art.

Ci also introduces a new program called Solo Shows in this yearand’s fair, where five galleries curate presentations of one of their represented artists, including Italian installation and performance artist Marco di Giovanni, Polish artist Adam Jastrzebski, Turkeyand’s ihsan Oturmak, Romanian sculptor Bogdan Rata and American artist Zio Ziegler, best known for his murals.
Works that have been exhibited this year in two of the worldand’s leading contemporary art fairs, Londonand’s Frieze and Parisand’ Foire Internationale dand’Art Contemporain, are also on display at Ci 2015. Curated by Marc-Olivier Wahler, the selection includes Swiss artistic duo LangBaumannand’s outdoor installation and”Comfort #4and” and Danish artist Jeppe Heinand’s work from his Geometric Mirrors series.
Other internationally renowned artists such as Franz Ackermann, Etel Adnan, Nevin Aladai, Stephan Balkenhol, Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, Tony Cragg, Robert Devriendt, Noandeumll Dolla, Mounir Fatmi, Rebecca Horn, Annette Kelm, Camille Henrot, Alicja Kwade, David LaChapelle, Markus Landupertz, Marwan, Carlos Motta, David Nash, Jaume Plensa, A. R. Penck, Michael Sailstorfer, Kiki Smith, Tatiana Trouvandeacute, Tunga, Claude Viallat, Jorinde Voigt, Tom Wesselmann and Nil Yalter are also exhibiting at Ci.
The fairand’s new media art section Plugin is marking its third iteration in 2015. Presented at the ICEC, Plugin features a selection of galleries, architecture and design studios and new-media initiatives from Berlin, Hong Kong, Basel, Tehran and Istanbul, exhibiting sound and light installations, kinetic sculptures, interactive and generative design, hologram installations and robotic designs under this yearand’s central theme and”X-CHANGE.and”
