Child washes up on shore in grim echo of Syrian child Aylan

Fishermen in the area spotted the body of the 4-year-old. The child, who was wearing a red sweater and blue pants, brought to mind Aylan Kurdi, a toddler who also washed up on Turkey’s Aegean coastline after the boat carrying him and his family went down in September. The photos showing the body of the dead 3-year-old circulated on social media and he became the symbol of the Syrian refugees who risk their lives to reach Europe.

On Sunday a survivor from the boat identified the toddler as a girl named Sena at Bodrum State Hospital and stated: “When she got on the boat, her mother would continuously call out Sena. That’s when I learned her name.” She was reportedly in the boat that went down Nov. 18 during which 14 other people went missing. During searches near the island of Catalada, identification cards, passports and clothing belonging to the refugees were found. Coast guard teams are still searching for six others.

Five people were rescued and 15 were missing when rescue teams began searching for passengers on the boat the toddler was on.
