Azerbaijani president receives UN Population Fund Award

Baku: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has received Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Osotimehin thanked the head of state for the successful cooperation with the UN, expressing satisfaction with the conditions created by the Azerbaijani government for further development of relations.

The UNFPA executive director emphasized the role of Azerbaijan in strengthening peace and security in the region.

He said that the UNFPA is interested in expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan and stressed the importance of developing joint programs and Azerbaijan’s cooperation with various institutions of the UN. Osotimehin went on to add that the UNFPA intends to cooperate with Azerbaijan in the fields of education, health, information and communication technologies, etc.

President Ilham Aliyev in his turn said that social policy has always been a priority for Azerbaijan since regaining its independence and that the main emphasis is on the country’s fulfillment of its needs. Highlighting the role of economy in the implementation of social policy, the head of state said that the implementation of social programs was not possible without a strong economy.

The head of state further said that Azerbaijan is interested in expanding relations with the UN and its institutions in a variety of areas.

Osotimehin then presented the award on behalf of the UN Population Fund to President Ilham Aliyev for his display of political will, determined activities and huge efforts in the realization of issues of the UN International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994, support to the Sustainable Development Goals in Azerbaijan as well as his contributions to the improvement of the healthy living conditions of women and young people.
