Athlete Pistorius sentenced to five years in prison over culpable homicide

JOHANNESBURG: South African athlete Oscar Pistorius was sentenced at Pretoria’s High Court for the killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Tuesday after being cleared of murder but convicted of culpable homicide.

Pistorious shot to death Steenkamp in February, 2013. During the case, the judge found him guilty of culpable homicide. “Having regard to the circumstances in the matter, I am of the view that a non-custodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community,” Judge Thokozile Masipa said. “On the other hand, a long sentence would also not be appropriate either, as it would lack the element of mercy.” she added at the court.

The athlete was banned from competing in Paralympic events during the entirety of his five-year prison sentence by the International Paralympic Committee.
