As curfew enters 11th day, heavy clashes continue in Nusaybin

The authorities placed Nusaybin under a round-the-clock curfew on Nov. 13 that remains in place as security forces clear trenches and barricades from the streets.

Guns have never been silenced in Nusaybin since the curfew was imposed. The clashes are taking place between Turkish security forces and members of the Patriotic Revolutionary Youth Movement (YDG-H) — an affiliate of the terrorist PKK — across the district, in particular three neighborhoods where the clashes have intensified.

In the meantime, a group of locals staged a protest in Nusaybin against the curfew and the ongoing fighting by banging pots and pans on Sunday evening.

A 400-person group, including members from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and Democratic Regions Party (DBP), went from Sanlıurfa province to Nusaybin to protest the days-long curfew in the tense district. The group gathered in the Yenisehir neighborhood of Sanlıurfa on Monday morning to travel to Nusaybin. Speaking on behalf of the group, the head of the DBP Sanlıurfa branch, Hidayet Enmek, said: “Nusaybin, which has been under pressure for 10 days, is not alone. We will support the locals in Nusaybin today with all of our provincial and district organizations.”

In another related incident, HDP deputies held a joint press conference in Parliament on Sunday evening to protest the days-long curfews being imposed in southeastern towns since late July. Among the HDP deputies were parliamentary group chairmen Pervin Buldan and İdris Baluken and several other pro-Kurdish deputies.

During their press conference, the HDP deputies held photos taken from those districts after the curfews were lifted. Speaking at the conference, Baluken accused Parliament of remaining ineffective towards the human rights violations taking place in southeastern Turkey during the curfew periods. Baluken emphasizing that the curfews being imposed in the Southeast is against the law and the Constitution.
