ANAS Institute says printing in foreign language ‘inappropriate’ of names on soccer jerseys in local championship

Baku: The printing in a foreign language of names on soccer jerseys in TOPAZ Premier League is inappropriate, Gulu Maharrali, the head of the monitoring department of the Institute of Linguistics named after Nasimi of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told APA.

“We will appeal to AFFA regarding this issue. Of course, the international matches are exceptions. The name of the football player is written in the Azerbaijani language in scoreboard, but in foreign language in the jerseys during local championship. It is inappropriate,” he said.

Maharramli noted that the Azerbaijani language is used in 22 fields in the country.

“The issue will be raised in this regard. Gurban Gurbanov spoke in the Azerbaijani language at the press conference in Ukraine. It was a positive case. We sent a letter to him on behalf of the Institute. We will focus on this issue,” he said.

“Qurbanov” surname is written as Gurbanov in the form of “Neftchi’ and “Elşən” name is written as Elshan in the form of “Khazar Lankaran” that are competing in Topaz Premier League.
