Ambassador: US intends to arrange meeting of Azerbaijani, Armenian presidents by year-end

U.S. Ambasador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta has arrived in Barda district to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of three U.S.-sponsored humanitarian water projects in Barda and Aghjabadi districts.

First of all, the ambassador first Barda’s Yeni Dashkend village, met with the local residents and then familiarized himself with the living conditions of the IDPs settled in the village.

Cekuta told reporters that the U.S., through its Military European Command, will initiate three humanitarian water improvement projects in the villages of Yeni Dashkend, Alkhasli, and Ardushlu.

“The project will be coordinated through the U.S. Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation. Once completed, the three projects are expected to improve water access and distribution for nearly 700 families,” the ambassador added.

The U.S. sees no alternative to the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said the ambassador.

He went on to add that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are trying to arrange a meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents by the end of the year.

“The Minsk Group co-chairs, including all co-chairs have increased their efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. U.S. co-chair Warlick has visited the region several times this year. The last time he visited Azerbaijan last week. Ambassador Warlick rightly said the conflict cannot be regarded as frozen one, because people are being killed,” he said.

The U.S. continues working on the conflict’s settlement and intends to arrange a meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian president by year-end, Cekuta noted.
