All police officers detained alleged wiretapping released

MERSIN: All 27 police officers who had detained in the southern province of Mersin in a wave of operations over claims of illegal wiretapping were released.

Released police officers have said they were targeted because they conducted a probe into genetically modified rice in Mersin that involved several government ministers.

Mersin Police Department ‘s Intelligence Unit Ali Cengelci and Ali Ihsan Kaya, and police officers Yavuz Efe and Ilyas Avcı amond the released officers.

The Counterterrorism Unit of the Mersin Police Department conducted early morning raids on the homes and offices of 26 police officers and detained them earlier this week, as part of an operation over claims of illegal wiretapping.

The government has been conducting a massive purge of police officers since a corruption scandal went public on Dec. 17, 2013, in addition to masterminding a defamation campaign against those considered to be part of the “parallel structure,” a term coined by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to refer to the faith-based Hizmet movement. President Erdogan is reported to be enraged by the release of some of the police officers.
