Aksener to respond to call for MHP extraordinary congress

Aksener wrote on Twitter on Nov. 23, “I will hold a press conference on Nov. 30 to express my views on the call for an extraordinary congress in our party.”

The MHP suffered a major defeat in the Nov. 1 general election, in which the number of its deputies fell to 40, down from 80 in the general election held just five months earlier. The election defeat has prompted an emergence of intraparty opposition. The dissidents in the party need to collect signatures from 245 party delegates for an extraordinary congress to be held in which candidates can run for the party’s top post. The MHP has 1,220 delegates, 1,100 of whom are elected, while the rest are party officials who are naturally considered delegates.

In a press conference on Oct. 21, former MHP deputy Sinan Ogan announced that he would run for leadership in the party and said that enough signatures had been collected from MHP congress delegates to call for an extraordinary congress. Ogan, who recently announced his leadership bid, said that he and Aksener and former MHP deputy Koray Aydın had prepared a document co-signed by the trio calling for an extraordinary congress under the slogan “A congress for leadership.”

Ogan was expelled from the party by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahceli in August but returned to the party on Nov. 2 after securing a court order.
