27 detained in ‘reasonable suspicion’ operation in western Turkey

A total of 27 people were detained on the charges of providing financial support to alleged members of the “parallel structure”, a phrase coined by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to refer to followers of the faith-based Gulen movement, in the western province of Manisa on Tuesday morning.

The operation, ordered by the Manisa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, was performed on “reasonable suspicion”. Police officers from the Manisa Provincial Security Directorate carried out simultaneous raids to 35 different locations as a part of the investigation launched against what is described by the government as the “Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organization (FETO)”.

Doctors, lawyers, businessmen, educators and contractors were among the 27 people detained in the operation along with a department chief of Bank Asya, which is Turkey’s largest Islamic lender that was founded by Hizmet followers in 1996.

The detainees were sent to Manisa Provincial Security Directorate for interrogation after they went through medical examinations in Manisa State Hospital.

The police is searching for eight more people within the scope of the operation.
