236 women murdered by partners in first 10 months across Turkey

Lawyer Nevin Canbaz, head of Woman Right Commission of Bursa Bar Association, stated that a total of 236 women were killed by their partners in the first 10 month of 2015.

Speaking at a press conference on International Day to Stop Violence Against Women, Canbaz mentioned about news reports on violence against women. “According to local and national media reports, in the first 10 months of 2015 men murdered 236 women since they want to divorce or marry them. Violence against women continues increasingly. 15 women and girls were raped and five were forced to prostitution,” said Canbaz.

She also underlined that the violence cannot be addressed only through laws saying awareness of the society must be raised even in the kindergartens. “Unless ensuring gender equality in the society, the laws lose their meaning and murders cannot be prevented” Canbaz added.
